Catherine McGINNIS worked as a telephone operator in Steubenville. Jasper liked her voice so much he asked her out on a date. Catherine wanted to see what he looked like, so they arranged a time the next day when he would walk through town and she could see him out of her window. I guess she liked what she saw!

He was never married. Bill was briefly a child actor. I found a listing for a movie called “Along Came Youth” (1930) which lists Billy WHEATON in the credits as one of the Neetsfoot Boys. This would have been when Bill was about 11 years old, the right age. Mom always said he was a Dead End Boy or an East End Boy, so this is probably him in that movie.

Joseph Xavier WHEATON, age 88, passed away on August 22, 2005 in Colorado Springs. He was born on May 9, 1917 at Cleveland, Ohio, a son of the late Jasper E. and Katherine McGinniss WHEATON. He was a veteran of WWII, having served with the U.S. Navy, he was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, he was an artist and had been a volunteer for Silver Key, he enjoyed helping people. Joseph is survived by a son; Phillip (Nancy) WHEATON of Frederick, Michigan, a daughter; Kathy Wheaton SCOTT of Colorado Springs, four grandchildren; Paula J. NORDER of Portland, Oregon, Janet POPPEI of Waterford, Michigan, Shawn F. SCOTT and Erin E. SCOTT both of Colorado Springs, three great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his wife; Betty Kaveney WHEATON, three brothers; Ambrose J., Gregory A. and William G. WHEATON. The Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at Evergreen Funeral Home. Memorial Mass will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, August 25, 2005 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church 2715 E. Pikes Peak Ave. Colorado Springs. Inturnment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs. The family requests that memorial donations be made to Pikes Peak Hospice 825 E. Joe’s mother was Catherine with a C.; Joe’s wife was Elizabeth Rita “Bettie” Caveney, with a C. He called her Bettie Blue Eyes. Joe was a chef in the Navy. After his service, he opened a bakery. After retirement, Joe continued to bake every day. He painted watercolor greeting cards. Every time he sent a card, you got an original work of art. He was an amazing man and is missed.
