John MEIGS is the important clue to the origin of Thomas WHEADON:

Vincent MEGGS and His Sons

Vincent MEGGS (#1) was the first member of the “family” in America. He came to America with his sons Vincent, Jr. (#2), John (#3) and Mark (#4). It was his son John who changed the spelling of the family name to MEIGS. The reason for the change is unknown today. The name is still pronounced MEGGS.

ORIGINS

Vincent has been located among the Bishop’s Transcripts of the parish of Chardstock, Dorset. These records commence in 1579, and extend with few breaks through 1641. Douglas RICHARDSON of Tucson, AZ, was surprise in 1991 to find the baptism records for three children of Vincent’s while searching these transcripts. The record also provides us, for the first time, the given name of MEGGS’ wife, Emma. These three entries read as follow:

A further mention of Vincent comes from the records of Axminster, Devon, England, which is an adjacent parish to Chardstock. There one Vincent MAGGS is appointed the overseer of the will of John MAGGS. The will was proved in the Court of the Archdeaconry of Exeter on 17 September 1632 with the only surviving abstract in the collection of Sir Oswin MURRAY held at the West Country Studies Library at Exeter. The will reads:

“Will of John MAGGS of Axminster, 1632:

I John MAGGS of Axminster, husbandman. To my daughter Alice, if she marry to the liking of her mother and brother Stephen, 20 marks. To my daughter Jane, 20 marks when 18. To my daughter Elizabeth, 20 marks when 18. To my children John[,] Emmet and Joan, 20 marks each. To John HORE, son of Constantine HORE and Agness my daughter £4 when 14. The rest to Agnis, my wife, and Stephen my son, executors; overseers: Vincent MAGGS, Thomas LOVINGE; witnesses: Edward STAPLE, Wm STEART.

From records found at the Devon, England, Record Officer in the PETRE Family records, it appears that Vincent MEGGS was an Innkeeper, moving from Chardstock to Axminster in 1617 to become landlord of the Angel Inn. There is no Angle Inn in Axminster today. Research might be able to trace its site, or even the building. These records also indicate the Vincent MEGGS at times used the alias Vincent LOVE and at other times was known as Vincent LOVE alias Vincent MEGGS. It would be worthwhile searching records for the LOVE alias MEGGS surname elsewhere in England.

JOHN MEIGS

John MEIGS is recorded on February 24, 1644 in New Haven, CT, as having been admitted a member of the court, and the same year is admitted a freeman. In 1648 he bought the lot known in recent history as “Cutler Corner,”

The conveyance of this property is on record and reads: “William JEANES passeth over to John MEGGS his house and house lot lying on the corner over against the house of John BUDD, and the highway.” MEIGS owned this property for 10 years before giving it to the town in 1658. John appears in the court records of New Haven throughout 1645, 1646, 1647, and 1648. On December 5, 1648, New Haven Court, Richard PERRY declared that MEIGS had not delivered the 10 bushel of wheat ordered by the court earlier. The court ordered MEIGS to hand over the wheat and “for the contemptuous cariage of John MEGGS to the court in refusing to fulfill their order in the attachment laid upon the corn the court fined him xx.” John also appears in the records on January 6, 1662, about a debt he claimed from the Estate of Thomas JEFFRIES.

John was a tanner, currier and shoemaker. On March 3, 1653/4 he was admitted to Guilford as a planter on his buying a 100lb. allotment at Hammonassett (Hammonassett became East Guilford and is now Madison).

John also purchased from the agent of Thomas JONES, on March 4, 1667/8, the land on the east side of Guilford Green.

John later moved to Killingworth, CT., where he died on January 2, 1672. He married Thomasine FRYE, daughter of William FYE (emigrated to Weymouth MA about 1636) in England about 1632.

From the above we can deduce that Thomas WHEADON was b. in Devon, probably in or near Axminster, about the year 1635. As he was apprenticed at about the age of 9 before he left England with John MEIGS, I would guess that he was an orphan.

Thomas WHEDON, who died in 1691, was another early Colonial Settler of the general era of Henry BURT and Edward LACY. The family name of WHEADON was changed to WHEATON later, about 1755. As connecticut was first settled in 1632 to 1635, and had a population of only 3,000 as late as 1643, it is apparent that Thomas was one of the early settlers.

He settled in Branford, Connecticut shortly after it was founded in 1644. Branford was and is cloely associated with the town of New Haven. Despite ambitions of it’s founders the town of the new Haven jurisdiction were never more than small agricultural comunities in a region not well adapted for agricultural purposes. There were tanneries and one iron works but most manufacturing was done in the barns of the workmen.

Thomas took Oath of Fidelity 1657 in New Haven 7 February 1657 [Records of the Colony of New Haven 1638-1649, p. 140].

He was “of New Haven” on 20 Apr 1658 when he bought lands in Branford (LR1:275-6). He was living in Branford by Jan. 20, 1667 when he signed the New Plantation and Church Covenant. (“Early Records of Branford, now Branford, CT” “Genealogies of Connecticut Families” Vol. III P-W, p. 465-468]. He was there in Mar 1668/9 when he helped build a dam there (LR1:354).

From “WHEATON Family” by Earnest WHEATON: Anne HARVEY may have been a widow whose maiden name was Ann SMALL, daughter of Francis Small. New Haven Town Rec pp. 426-27, Dec 1659 – Jan 1659/60: At a Court held at New Haven the 3rd of Jan 1659. Francis HARVEY, a Frenchman, upon summons appearing, was told that he was to give answer concerning a treaty of marriage with a maid, carried on as its understood & as they both have confessed, to the engaging of themselves to one another, & without consent of parents of governor, contrary to a law here published, which was read, & they both were told that they had directly broke the law. To which he answered that there was no such law in the places where he hath been, nor did he know that there was any such law here; he was told that excuses him not, and that he must (if he live here) acquaint himself with the Laws established and submit to them. Ann SMALL was asked what she said to it having hired herself a servant for a year, she should within a month enter a treaty of marriage with a man, without consents of master, contrary to the Law. Ann SMALL pleaded that she was both ignorant of the Law & the breach of it, & that she intended to serve out her time with her Master; but Mr. YALE her Master, said that she had within a short time after she came to him, moved to be free; to which it was said that was the fruit of such treaties, that having got a suit of clothes of her master, by and by she would be gone from him & engage herself to a man, without the consent of her mother, who she confessed was living, for ought she knew, to whom it would be a great grief to hear of her irregular proceedings. Mr. YALE informed that the carriage of Ann SMALL was very burdensome to them, not only in respect of that particular before spoken of, but also she was a notorious liar & unfaithful, concerning which he declared that there lodging a woman of Connecticut at his house, she left a small scarf behind her, which sometime after was inquired for by John BENHAM to which Ann SMALL presently answered that there was none left there; but upon that occasion he asked his maid where she had that scarf which she wore; to which she answered that she had it when she lived with her master TOMPSON but she did not wear it because she thought it would be trouble to her dame & that she left it with Goodwife MALLERY who since sent it to her by John WAKEFIELD’s daughter; whereupon he inquired of Goodwife WAKEFIELD & Goodwife MALLERY growing suspicious of Ann SMALL asked him if he brought any kid gloves out of England; he told her, yes; she told him that his maid had given her a pair of kid gloves, which gloves upon inquiry at home he found that she had stolen from him; besides other things are gone, but how he knows not. Ann SMALL was asked if this that was spoken by her master was true; she said yes; she was told that she had the more cause to be ashamed: she was asked what else she had taken from her master, being other things are wanting; she said that she had nothing else but the gloves…Page 428 Francis HARVEY was told that he had broken the law by his irregular proceeding in this treaty of marriage with Ann SMALL & thereby he falls under the fine of 40, that must forthwith be paid & that the court had little encouragement to give liberty for him to settle here. Ann SMALL was also reproved for her impudent & insensibility under such miscarriages, & sentenced to pay 10 as fine for her lying; as for stealing the scarf, she is to pay 2, and 12, for the gloves; for her other miscarriages, it was declared that she deserves corporal punishment, which the Court will take their time to consider of, which she must expect unless her better carriage prevent it. Mr. YALE desired that he might be freed of Ann SMALL who has carried it so unsatisfyingly in his family; but no place being propounded to the satisfaction of the court, she left with Mr. YALE until further order.

New Haven Town Records Feb 1659/60: Francis HARVEY & Ann SMALL who were both fined the last Court, their fines being demanded; they were told that the Court approved not their going on in that league which had been witnessed against; Francis was warned to remove out of town this spring; he said he was sorry for what he had done, & desired that he might stay.

Mr. YALE is Thomas YALE was born in Denbighshire Wales. His mother’s (Anne Yale EATON) second husband was Theophilus EATON, Governor of New Haven Colony. Ann SMALL’s marriage to Thomas WHEATON occured 4 months after the court disallowed her marriage to HARVEY. March was the first month of the year, so May 24, 1661 would have been 4 months later. I am writing up a family history on this family unit, and am doing a “chapter” on their servants, and other people that lived in their households. I cannot find another person or family named SMALL in Jacobus, which is a very comprehensive work. So I am thinking that Ann SMALL was maybe indentured, and because indentured servants were not allowed to marry without the “permission” of the Court before their contract of servitude was up.

He was sued in court at New Haven on 5 Dec 1665 for slander and defamation for having called the wife of Richard NEWMAN a RAYLER: found guilty and fined 40 shillings plus costs. At the same court he was also found guilty of slander and defamation for accusing William BASSETT of stealing 3 bundles of flax, fined 15 shillings plus costs, “and left a serious admonition about his Carriage with the neighbors for the future.”

Joined the new compact of settlement in lieu of that wh. by those wh. went to New J.ersey had governed until then; He was one of 48 men who decided to remain in Branford when the residents moved to Newark, NJ; and signed a covenant there on June 20, 1667.

2 Mar. 1674-5–Thomas Whedon entered an action vs W. H. and Samuel WARD, collectors for the town, for a debt due him from the town and costs for work done for the town 40s. Court awarded the pltf. œ1–11s., he to pay the costs. [Hoadley Genealog Book, p. 7.]

Died 1691, leaving widow and five children Sarah married Samuel ELWELL and Esther married Edward JONSON. His name appears on the lists of proprietors, January 17, 1676, as having five children, and an estate valued at £96;

The last name is often spelled WHEADON/WHEDON/WHEATON, apparently the spelling of the name became WHEATON about 1755.

There was much confusion about whether Mary Ann SMALL had married Francis HARVEY but reading the court case information it looks as if it was just a contract to marry rather than an actual marriage

I realise this is not straight forward, but George W PAGE seems to have done a considerable amount of research into this and he seems quite adamant that she did not marry Francis HARVEY.

His will is in the Probate Records at Guilford, Connecticut, dated February 29, 1752, proved July 7, 1752. It names his wife, Hannah PLANT who was appointed administratrix, daughters Hannah WHEDON and Elizabeth PLANT. and sons John, Jonathan, James, Timothy, and Abraham.

The inventory of the estate places the valuation at s1007 6s. 1 1/4d. whereof s891 8s. 11 1/4d. was real estate, of which one hundred acres of land was in Litchfield. In the distribution, which was made December 19, 1752, Elizabeth is called the wife of Josiah PARRISH.

The people of the area, who were known as North Farmers, requested permission of the town of Branford in 1715 to have a separate preaching for themselves because of the distance to Branford and the size of their community. The town was reluctant and in 1717 the North Farmers appealed to the General Court. Nathaniel PAGE was one of the North farmers to sign the petition to Branford on May 6 1717 (Daniel PAGE was another signer)

To All People to Whom These Presents Shall Come, GREETING:

Know Ye, that I Nathaniel WHEDON of Branford, in the Co. of New Haven and Colony of Connecticut for the consideration of ten pounds lawful money, received to my full satisfaction of Abigail DEAR, of said town, Co, and colony aforesaid, do give, grant. bargain, sell and confimr unto the said Abigail DEAR, her heirs and assigns forever one certain piece of land lying in said Brandford and lying near a place called Canoe Brook, containing about half an acre, be it more or less; joining South upong the country road so far as to take half my well, then running North the same length with George DEAR’s own land, joining West and North upon my own land and East upon said George DEAR’s land, at each end an equal width/

Private in Captain Luther STODDARD’s (of Salisbury) 6th Company, Burrall’s Regiment. Commanded by Colonel Charles BURRAL (of Canaan); Connecticut Line.

After the retreat from Canada in April and May 1776, General Benedict ARNOLD organised the constriction of the first Ameircan Navy on Lak Champlain to thwart thw British invasion from Canada. The fleet was biolt at Whithall and outfitted at Ticonderoga. The British defeated the American Navy at the Battle of Valcour Island, October 11, 1776

George DEAR had always followed the sea. When the Army retreated to Ticonderoga an order was given to enlist all men who had been sailors, for service on the boats upon Lake Camplain. He enlisted. In the engagements on the lake it was the custom when the flash of the enemy’s guns was seen to cry “A Shot”, then the men would fall down. George DEAR, being deaf, did not hear, and he was cut almost in two by a cannon ball.

Although Kelly places this Samuel in Branford at the taking of the 1790 census there may have been 2 Samuels or perhaps this Samuel did return to Branford, because a Samuel of Southington had 3 children baptized by Rev. Benjamin Chapman in Southington all on May 21,1769; Rebekah [b.1762,] Phebe [b.1764] and Samuel, Jr. [b.1767] presumably the children of Samuel and Phebe LEWIS WHEADON [Timlows p234] I have not checked the 1790 census record for the number and age span of family members there of.

Martha, wife of Ephraim PAGE together with Sarah, the wife of Daniel PAGE and Lydia, the wife of Wm. BARKER and a few others, joined the Christ Church (became Presbyterian church) in Greenville on Wednesday, May 19, 1790, in the presence of Rev. Berian HOTCHKIN [p. 7, Records of the Presbyterian Church in the town of Greenville, Greene County, N.Y., transcribed by The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society and edited by Royden Woodward VOSBURGH, New York City, 1920, found in the L. H. & G. Room under F129G715G7]. This proves that Martha was still alive in 1790 and still the wife of Ephraim PAGE. Therefore her husband was probably NOT the Ephraim Page who m. Sally JUDD in Branford on 28 October 1784, as was the opinion of Margery (Page) VANCE.

The William BAKER Jr. was the ancestor of the BARKERs of Marshall Twp. near Deansboro for which the Barker Rd. and Barker Road Cem. are named. His wife was named Lydia. The family was from North Branford, Conn. (as was the family of Ephraim PAGE). A William BARKER was granted one square mile in the northwest corner of Totoket in March 1687 [“Hist. of North Branford” , p.8]. He appear next to Ambrose NORTON in the 1800 Federal Census of Freehold, Greene Co. , NY, with (3 under 10; 2@16-26 and himself @ 26-45 with 2 females <10; 1@10-16, and wife@ 26 -45. [p. 30]

Together with her husband she appears age 45+ in the 1800 Federal Census of Freehold (Greenville), Greene Co., NY. [p. 30]

On May 5, 1811 Martha PAGE was dismissed from the church at Greenville “to the churches at large”, meaning she was still alive and was moving west with her married children [Records, Op . cit. p. 53]. She is possibly buried in an unmarked grave in the little Barker Cem. in Marsh all Twp. Oneida Co., or in Madison Co., NY, where her other children lived.”

“L.D.S. # 7450354-O and 7128715-7 records birth as well as Branford VR (Vol. 3, p. 71). He was a Lieutenant in the militia prior to Revolutionary War. On town committee selected on 17 November 1775 to “Secure proper ammunition for defense and conserve same.” Branford Rev. Recd . on p.3.

Married Martha NORTON who was mother of his children. He was NOT the Ephraim Page who married Sally JUDD on 28 October 1784 at Branford.

From the Conn. Historical Collections, Vol. VIII. Conn. Line 1777-81, p. 65: “Short Term Levies 1779- Return of the Eight M Men that belonged to the 4th Conn. Regt. commanded by John DURKEE, Col. Ephraim PAGE of Branford, July 20, 1779 – Jan. 15, 1780 term of service 6 months . Discharged 15 January 1780.”

Ephraim PAGE sold his three parcels of land in North Branford in 1784: 8-1/2 acres to Capt. Reuben ROSE of Branford on 6 May 1784 (v. 11:32); 43 acres to Justus Rose of Branford on 12 August 1784 (v. 11:44); 10 acres on Toket Hill to Joseph BUNNELL of Branford on 13 August 178 4 (v. 18:196) Recorded on 27 February 1819.

Ephraim appeared on the Tax List of the Old Town of Coxsackie in then the county of Albany, New York, on 12 June 1787. Also appearing near his name were the names of Eli NORTON, Ambrose NORTON and John BAKER, Jr.. Ephraim’s name does NOT appear on the 1790 Census of Connecticut. He appears in the 1790 Federal Census of Freehold twp., Albany (now Greene) Co., NY with 3 over 16 and 2 females. He was next to his son Timothy PAGE and Isaac NORTON.

On March 18, 1792 he and his sons, Eli, Luther, and Timothy PAGE together with: Ambrose, Asher, Giles, and Isaac NORTON (of Guilford); William BARKER (Jr. of Branford); Israel BALDWIN (the father of Dinah BALDWIN who m. Ephraim’s brother, Daniel, in N. Branford); and others signed a petition to the legislature protesting the validity of the Prevost and Seaton patents near Greenville, Greene Co., New York. [Raymond BEECHER “Out To Greenville and Beyond – Historical Sketches of Greene Co.” (Cornwallville, N.Y.: Hope Farm Press, 1977), p. 102.] Ephraim and his sons, Ephraim, Jr. and Timothy, appear on the 1800 census of N.Y. (Son Eli had already gone to Oneida Co., N.Y.).

He appears on a 1795 map of the Prevost Patent, with the names of the people who occupied th e land listed on it.

I have been able to locate and orient the map based upon the stream meaderings. The stream that runs north and south through Capt. Elon Norton’s property in N. 16 is less than 1/2 mile east of Norton Hill. Greenville is to the east of the larger stream running north and south a t N. 14, and off the map to the right, or at N. 12.

Note in N16 next to Capt. Elon NORTON are two other NORTON plus I(saac) PAGE, and in N19 to the south of them is E. PAGE plus another PAGE to the right of him.

I believe that the Locust Cemetery is on what was Capt. Elon NORTON’s property in N. 16!

Both Elon NORTON and the two PAGES were adjacent to the Augustin Prevost property. No wonder they signed a petition against it.

I find other NORTONs in: N.5 (F. NORTON); N.4 (R & L. NORTON); N. 16; N. 28 (Samuel); N. 37 with another PAGE; N. 38 (D., but could be HORTON like N39 & N. 40).

The BARKER family from Branford is in N.17 just west of Norton Hill.

He appears between his sons, Ephraim, Jr. and Timothy in the 1800 Federal Census of Freehold Twp., Greene Co., NY with a son 16-26 himself 45+ and a wife 45+ and daughter 10-16. [p.30 ]

Ephraim d. intestate and his Probate Records are found in the Greene Co. Court House. On 30 April 1803 Timothy PAGE was appointed the executor of Ephraim’s estate. His sons-in-law, Isaac NORTON and Henry JOHNSON, also signed the document.

The document reads: “”Sealed with our seals dated the thirtieth Day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight Hundred and Three and of our Independence the Twenty Seventh.” [Edith MOYER Page, p. 35 and Appendix !)Therefore Ephraim died before the end of April 1803 and is probably buried in an unmarked grave in the Locust Cemetery, at the intersection of highway 81 and Maple Ave. between West Greenville and Norton Hill. My search for his tombstone was unsuccessful and letters to the local mortician and town historian have remained unanswered.

Greenville, formed from Coxsackie and Freehold March 26, 1803, is one of the hilly towns at the end of the Heidelbergh mountains. The original title of the town was Greenfield until 1808 , when it was changed to Freehold, and became again Greenville not until 1809. The heavy soils of the section are fitted for dairying, or the raising of hay, although apples have become of increasing value. The region was in former years one of the busiest tannery sections in the county. In 1768 the British authorities granted two tracts of 2,000 and 5,000 acres in the western part of the town to Maj. Augustine Provost, a survivor of the Frenc h War, who erected a fine mansion on his domain. Godfrey Brendow, who settled near the site o f the village of Freehold, in 1774, is usually credited with being the first settler of Green ville. The main hamlets of the area are: Freehold, Greenville and Norton.

“He was the Rev. War Vet. who served several terms (6 years – 8 mo.) with the 1st Conn. Regt. as a Sergeant, then in the 4th Conn. Regt.. He died before 1800 in Greenville. He was engaged to marry a young woman named Effie BREWER who died just before the wedding. He later married Rachal FISH and named his first daughter Effie Brewer PAGE. He died before 1800 and his wife, Rachal, appears on the 1800 census with one son under 10 and 4 females under 16. Rachal was no doubt a redhead, as at least two of her descendants had red hair.

His Rev. War Pensions were: BLW 6261; S46329; and R7872.

His grandson, Luther PAGE lived in Fenner, Madison Co., N.Y. in 1829 where he was on jail limits for debt of $7.75. He was probably the same Luther PAGE who appeared in the 1820 census at Cazenovia in Madison County, NY. He was between 16-26 in the same census in 1800.

His son, Stephen PAGE, in a sworn statement on 26 April 1854, stated that his father Luther PAGE died in the year 1794; however a son LUTHER was b. on 9 July 1795 (The son d. on 9 September 1874, ae 79 years-2 months)! So he probably died in the fall after conceiving a son, who he never lived to see.

He may have been the father of a Daniel PAGE, b. 28 May 1768 who died on Mar. 10, 1837 and is buried with a readable tombstone in Chittenango Falls State Park in Cazenovia, NY (Photo sent by Mrs. Larry VOIGT). If so, the son Daniel was probably born to Effie BREWER who died just before her m. to Luther PAGE.”

m.(1) Chloe PAGE probably in Greene or Madison Co., NY. He was named after his uncle, Elon wh o was b. about 1739 and d. of dysentery on 30 Sept. 1756. Elon m.(2) Martha PAGE sister of Chloe. Martha m.(1) Elon’s brother, Isaac NORTON in 1784 probably in Greenville, Greene (Then Albany), NY.

He was a signer of the petition, as was his brother Isaac. He did not appear in the 1810 census of Greenville. He was the builder of the second meeting-house (church) in Greenville in August 1800.

He appears in the 1810 Federal Census of Roxbury, Delaware Co., NY next to Eli NORTON with (00011-00201) [p. 372].

He appears, age 80-90 with a wife the same age in the 1840 Federal Census Records of Paris Twp., Oneida Co., NY (p. 366).

He was a Rev. War Vet. He appears as Capt. Elon NORTON in N. 16 on a 1795 Map of the Tract of Land Belonging To August Prevost. He is later referred to as a Major when he m. Martha NORTON

He appears, age 40 (sic, 82) in the 1840 Rev. War Pensioners’ list of Paris Twp., Oneida Co., NY.

Elon NORTON is on a Conn. List of Pensioners as a Private and Benjamin NORTON is listed as a Lieut.. [p. 643]

On another List “Connecticut in the Revolution”, p. 224 Elon Norton of Guilford in Hall’s Company, enlisted Mar. 29, 1777 for the duration of the War [ The Peace Treaty was not signed until 1783!]. He was a Corporal on July 4, 1781.

Also on the same list is Ambrose NORTON of Guilford in Hall’s Company enlisted May 28, 1777 , enlisted for the duration, a Corporal on July 10, 1780. I am guessing that they were brothers, and Ambrose was older than Elon.

Elon’s pension record is listed on another document as S43090W

That record should be available at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., or through a branch office.

Elon was buried at age 92 in Feb. 1850 in the Old Gilboa Cemetery but was disinterred and reburied between 1918 and 1921 in the New Gilboa Cemetery.

Gilboa Rural Cemetery Town of Gilboa, Schoharie County, NY

This is the “new” cemetery that was established after the seven cemeteries were moved when the Schoharie Reservoir was built in the 1920s. All people were not moved to this location, rather all over the area wherever the families chose (see removals database elsewhere on this website). Tombstones in this new cemetery were copied by me in the summer of 1997. Most in the old part of the cemetery and many in the new part of the cemetery were moved for the reservoir from 1918-1921 from these cemeteries in Old Gilboa: Hoagland Cemetery, Old Gilboa Cemetery, Gilboa Cemetery Association, Emory A. Lewis Cemetery, Adelia McCauley Cemetery, Charles Lewis Farm Cemetery, Cemetery on Starr D. Mase farm. Graves with no monuments numbered up to 390 are

also in the old part of the cemetery. I have a list of the corresponding names and numbers. People may contact me for information.

!Rev. war vet who served in ? Regt. Conn. Militia, as a Pvt. in the 7th Conn. Regt.. Received a pension S11186. He was in Greenville, N.Y. 1800, 1810, and went to Sullivan, Madison Co., N.Y. in 1818, where he appears in the Fed. Census of 1820, 1830 and 1840. He was of Sullivan, NY in the HOADLEY Book, p. 26.

He appears in the 1800 Federal Census of Freehold Twp., Greene Co., NY with a son 16-26 and himself 26-45 plus 4 daughters under 10, 1 10-16, 1 16-26 and his wife 26-45. [p. 31]

He may have been the Timnothy PAGE who appeared in the 1814 Census of the Town of Paris, Onei da Co., NY.”

Moved to Lowville, Lewis Co., NY where he was living in 1800. Based upon the fact that his brother Eli was in Oneida Co. by 1800 and that his mother was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Greeneville, Greene Co., NY in 1804, he is probably the Ebenezer who m. Rachel HILL on 27 May 1798 in the 1st Presbyterian Church at Whitestown, Oneida Co. (adjoins Lewis Co.), NY.. Whitesto wn was named after Judge Hugh WHITE who emigrated with his whole family to that location from Middletown, CT. in January 1785.

Sarah WHITE Judge Hugh WHITE’s first cousin, one generation removed, m. Eli PAGE, Ebenezer’ s brother.

Ebenezer and Rachel PAGE had an Ebenezer b. 7 October 1807 in Watertown, Jefferson Co. (also adjoins Lewis Co.). He was in Jefferson Co. only in 1810 according to census records.”

“A different Rachel PAGE, the widow of Luther PAGE, appears on the 1800 Federal Census and the 1810 Town census of Greenville, Greene Co..

Info for place of birth as per U.S. Census of 1850 at Beaver Island, MI.

Marriage record from L.D.S. files. Married to Ebenezer PAIGE at Whitesboro, New York at First Presbyterian Church. Church records found in Library of Congress give the date of m. as 27 May 1798, whereas I.G.I. gives a date in April 1798.

After her husband’s death in 1823, Rachel moved her family to Brownhelm, Loran Co., OH where they stayed until sometime in 1835 when most of them moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., OH, where they were part of the Mormon community living there. The Mormons were driven out and moved to Western Missouri where they were again forced out. She then moved with them to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., IL

“She m.(1) Isaac NORTON and m(2) his brother, Elon NORTON [Edith Moyer PAGE, “George PAGE of Branford, Conn. and Some of his Descendants” (Privately Published, 1977), p. 36-37.] Moved to Greene and Oneida Counties NY. She was admitted to the church at Greenville as the wife of Isaac NORTON on February 15, 1807 [p. 47, church records].

They immediately had several of their children baptized there. She was living in Oneida Co. on 2 May 1829, when she testified that her brother was a vet of the Rev. War. They may have also moved on to Nunda, Livingston Co., NY. (per Marge VANCE).

The Elon NORTON-Martha (PAGE) NORTON Marriage was in Sauquoit in 1834. The reference is: York, Thursday, 6 Mar 1834; as transcribed by Greene County Historical Society in Listings from Four Catskill Newspapers – 1811 to 1849 (05/15/89), page 109, record number 1834-0013; Vedder Library, Coxsackie, New York.

Martha lived nearly as long as Elon (1758-1850)–the last reference I can find to her was an 1847 sale of land in Paris, separate from Elon. But it seemed clear to me that it was she , and not the Martha NORTON who was the wife of Deacon Oliver NORTON, who was also in Oneida County. I found one reference to her having died in Livingston County, NY–it was in a fairly lengthy letter on the PAGES in the PAGE genealogical file in Greene County. Do you know that letter, written a long time back by (I think) Marjorie (Page) VANCE?

Martha moved to Paris in the late 1820s (it’s reasonable that she should have followed her brothers and children). She’s in the Greenville census in 1820, and in the Paris census in 1830. She was Martha NORTON on 2 May 1829 when she stated that her brother Timothy PAGE served in the Rev. War. [Edith Moyer PAGE, p. 46.]

Her sales of Greene County land are in the mid to late 1820s. I would love to find information on whom her daughters married–there were at least four–Parmela, Polly, Alpha, and Clarissa, but they seem to be a closed book.”

3 sons under 10; 1@1016; 1@16-26; himself 26-45; Daughters: 1 under 10 and wife 16-26.

[Note that he probably had a total of 4 sons living with them then]

He signed the estate papers of Ephraim PAGE, his father-in-law, on 30 April 1803. Timothy PAGE and Henry JOHNSON, the husband of Huldula PAGE, also a daughter of Ephraim PAGE.

He appears in the 1810 Federal Census of Freehold (Greenville), Greene Co., NY with (11401-31101) [p. 157].

[Note that he probably had six sons and 5 daughters]

He probably had a son, Isaac NORTON, Jr. who appears in the 1830 Federal Census of Trenton Twp., Oneida Co., NY, with: males:2@10-15; 2@15-20; 1@40-50; Females: 2<5; 2@5-10; 1@15-20;1@30 -40.[p. 288]

Most, if not, all of their children were b. prior to 1800 and the bulk baptized together in 1807.

The source of their birth order is a message from Mark NORTON.”
