[from Scope and Content] Vincent Wheaton of Stevington, mason, 66, has lived there from birth. About 60 yrs. ago, when he was “a schooleboy at Stevington”, Jn. Bromhall, who lived at the manor or courtho., repaired the N. aisle of the chancel & caused a beam to be laid at the E. end of the N. aisle to bear up the chancel roof. Later his s. Robt. had the two seats in the N. aisle repaired & made into one by the carpenter, Jn. Lockett (dcd.) & himself (he underpinned the seat with stone). he has a cottage in Stevington. Says that part of the chancel belongs to Fra. Dive esq.

In the name of God Amen the One and Thirtyth day of December in the year of the Lord according to the computation of the Church of England, one thousand sixe hundred and Fifty & Two, I, William Wheaton of Oakeley in the County of Bedf., Mason, being sick & weak in body but of sound and perfect memory (God be praysed for the same) I do make & ordayne this my last will & testament in writinge in manner & form followinge: First, I bequeath my soule into the hands of Almighty God my Creator, hoping to be saved by the meritts of the death and passion of my Saviour & Redeemer, Jesus Christe. And as for my body, I commend it to the Earth, to be decently buryed att the discretion of my Executors hereafter named   And as for my wordly goodes which my God of his mercy hath endowed me withal, I give & dispose in manner and form followinge: First, I give & bequeath to my sonne, John Wheaton, one Chest standinge in the parlour by the Windowe. Item, I give and devise to my said sonne, John, and to his heires etc., All that my acre of meadowe with the (appurtenances lyinge & beinge in Susoe Meadowe in Oakeley aforesaid next to the meadowe grounde nowe in the tenure of one George Negoose on the Weste & lately purchased by me of Richard Taylor Esq. And my will & meaninge is That my lovinge wyfe, Penelope, shall have, enjoy & take the issues, rents & proffitts of the said acre of meadowe for the better education of my younger Children untill my said sonne, John, shall accomplish the Full age of One & Twenty yeares. And my will & meaninge is That the devise of the said acre of meadowe shall be to the said Robert Faldoe & his heires in truste to the intent That the said Robert Faldoe & his heires shall sell the said one acre of meadowe att the beste value he may towards & for the payment of a certaine debt of Twenty poundes due by me by bond to one Lewes Norman of Turvey. And if it shall happen that the said acre of meadow shall or cannot be sould for so much money as shall fully discharge such debt unto the said Lewes Norman, Then my will & meaninge is

That the Executrix of this my will & testament, hereafter named, shall make upp & pay & discharge such part of such debt so remaininge & not raysed by such sale, out of my goods & perssonael & estate hereby remaynin to my said Executrix.

Item, I give & bequeath to my sonne, Symon, one other chest standinge in the chamber above the parlour and one little Coffer standinge in my Chamber att my bedd’s foote. Item, I give & bequeath to eachof my sonnes, William & Symon, Five pounds a peece to putt them out apprentices to some trades att the discretion of my Executrix with the Consent of my Overseer of this my last will & testament. And my will & meaning isThat the my Executrix. hereafter named, shall not putt outt my said sonnes, Willm & Symon, as apprentices, That then my said Executrix shall hereby pay to my said sonnes, Willm & Symon, ffive pounds a peece when they shall accomplyshe theire severall ages of Twenty one yeares. Item, I give & bequeath to my sonnes, Willm & Symon, Tenne poundes due to me upon bond by my brother Vincent Wheaton, equally to be payed devided betwixt them & to be payed them, likewyse when they shall accomplyshe theire severall ages of one & Twenty yeares, by my said Executrix if the said money shall then be due & payd by the said Vincent to my said Executrix. It has been assumed that John, the son of Vincent baptised in Stevington on the 22 August 1630 is the same John who was the father of the John who was baptised on the 23rd February 1672 as these two WHEATON entries follow each other in the Stevington Baptism register.

In the name of God Amen, the 20th day of April 1701, according to the computation of the Church of England. I, John Wheaton, of Steventon in the County of Bedford, Masson, being of perfect memory and Remembrance, praised be God, do make this my last will and testament in manner following.

First, I bequeath my soul in the Hands of Allmighty God my maker, hoping that through the meritorious death and passion of Jesus Christ my only saviour and redeemer do receive free pardon for all my sins and as for my body, to be buried in Christian buriall at the discretion of my executrix hereafter nominated.

Item, I give unto my son, John Wheaton, the some of one shilling.

Item, I give unto my Granddaughter, Mary Wheaton, the sum of four pounds.

Item, I give unto my Grand-daughter, Elizabeth Wheaton tenn shillings.

Item, I give unto my Grandaughter, Prissila Wheaton, the sum of tenn shillings.

The Legacies are to be paid 12 months after my decease from all the rest of my lands, Houses, Lodges, Tennements and goods whatsoever.

I give unto my wife Duglas, for ever, upon condition that she shall pay all my debtes and legasies and make her sole Executrix of this my last will and testament, revoaking all other wills and testaments

There was a marriage in Carlton, Bedfordshire on the 1st December 1734 between Benjamin HARPER, shepherd and Mary WHEATON spinster, both of Carlton. From the records collected so far this could appear to be the only possible Mary.

Notes for Elizabeth UNKNOWN wife of John WHEATON:

We have no proof that Elizabeth is the wife of this John other than the fact that there does not seem to be another John WHEATON in the Stevington parish at this time. If John did marry twice, the three “unattached” entries in the registers would belong to his family, as are all the other forty. Futher research is required to ensure that this is the correct assumption.

of Samuel Rowe and the Close of pasture thereunto adjoining and belonging now in the occupation of my Son in Law John Tysoe with their Appurtenances unto my Son William Wheaton for and during the Term of his Life and from and after his decease I Give and Devise the same unto my Grandson James Wheaton and to his Heirs and Assigns forever He or they paying thereout unto my Granddaughter Martha Note re 1880 census information

There is only one possible H WHEATON birth in the England Birth Registration Index from 1845 to 1855. All the men except one died and all the women married so were no longer WHEATONs. The one man for whom we have no death did emgrate to America, but he was on the 1881 census in England, arriving in America a few years later. He could, of course, have come for a preliminary visit in 1880. He is not on the 1885 Colorado census. The problem with this individual, and most of his family, they changed the Christian name frequently. And only using an initial on this census does not help! More research required!

Name problem!

No Lyman WHEATON birth registered in England 1882-1884

No Lyman (anything like WHEATON) registered in 1883 +/- 2 years.

There were only 9 altogether in this period, Lyman HAIGH was the only one with Lyman as a first name, for all the others it was a second name. Interesting that this Lyman was Lyman H, this could be Lyman HAIGH born September quarter 1883 Wortley Yorkshire District, West Riding Yorkshire. However, he was buried 3 April 1884!

There was a birth for a Wheaton 14 Sep 1899 Read, Hunterdon County, New Jersey daughter of H P Lyman Wheaton, and Anna S Herd. H P Lynam WHEATON was shown as born England

A Harry WHEATON and Anna S HERD married in Chester, England in 1881, and a child, Alfred Ernest, was born in Chester in between January – March 1882, was he their son? Various members of this family used different names at different times and I have no record of the family in England after 1884. Could this be the same family?

I have now found the family on the 1920 census, without Lyman of course! I am more than certain that the child registered as Alfred Ernest is Lyman. More research being done. And on the 1900 census the eldest son is Alford, nearly Alfred, so I have decided to merge the details I have for the two families despite the change of names.

And I find I could have details of their journey to America where he is shown as Alfred and born 1882

Mrs. Florence Sophia COLBY, 3609 Pinetree Terrace, Falls Church, VA., formerly of Wellsville, died May 18, 1974 in the Sleepy Hollow Manor Nursing Home, Annandale, Va. She hadbeen a resident there for a number of years. She was born Dec. 23,1885 in Lancashire, England. She came to the United States with her family in 1891 when her father, the late Rev. Dr. H.P. LYMAN-WHEATON, was assigned to a pastorate in the Albany Episcopalian diocese. She married Haldwell S. COLBY in Ridgeway, N.J. October 3, 1910. He predeceased her Jan. 29,1973. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Robert A. BURGER of Wellsville; and Mrs. Lester W. BARBER of Falls Church; one son, Ernest H. COLBY of New Hope, Pa.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. William MARKERT and Mrs. Archie TUTTLE, both of New Jersey. Memorial services were held Monday afternoon in the Fort Meyer Chapel, Va.

Haldwell S. COLBY, 82, of Pinetree Terrace, died Monday in Northern Virginia Doctors Hospital. A mechanical engineer and inventor, Mr. COLBY was past president of the Air Preheater Corporation, and general sales manager of Combustion Engineering Co., in Wellsville. Mr. COLBY a member of the founding branch of the War Production Board during World War II, was also chairman of the board that designed

World War II’s M-3 tank, the Baldwin Locomotive Co. While in Wellsville he was on the Board of Directors of the Moore Steam Turbine Corporation before it became Worthington; on the Board of Directors of the First Trust Union Bankin the late 1920’s to middle 30’s. Mr. COLBY held patents in his field of power plant equipment and Navy boilers. He was executive vice president of the Malleable Founders Society in the late 1940’s and retired in 1952 as assistant to the president of the Springfield, Illinois Boiler Co.

Survivors include his widow, Florence, a resident of the Sleepy Hollow Manor Nursing Home in Annandale; two daughters, Mrs. Lester W. BARBAER of Falls Church and Mrs. Robert BURGER of Wellsville; a son, Ernest H. of New Hope, Pa.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held Monday in Ft. Myer Chapel.

“Skip” COLBY.

“Skip” COLBY passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, in Doylestown Hospital after a brief, but determined battle against cancer, COPD, and scleroderma. He was 68. Skip was the loving husband and hero of Taffy (Drada) Colby for 35 years. Born in Jenkintown, Pa, to Ernest and Lois (McENROE) COLBY, Skip later lived in Worcester, Mass, as a boy before moving to the New Hope area and attending Solebury School. Despite his love of cars and carpentry, Skip attended Drexel, Ithaca, Rider and St. Petersburg colleges before starting his own business as a building contractor and completing many homes, additions, and renovations in the area. Skip loved target practice, car races, football, boating, rescuing rottweilers, gardening, collecting juke boxes and Waterford crystal and decorating his home and property. After retirement he enjoyed the company of his wife and dogs and some much deserved down time. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Debbie and John EGNER of Middlebury, VT.; nieces and nephews, Mark and Maeve EGNER of Ringoes, N.J.; Scott and Katie EGNER of Boston, Mass.; Tracy WELCH of Weare, N.H.; Marcy and Tom WISNOWSKI of E. Middlebury, Vt.; and Brett EGNER of Baltimore, Md. He also is survived by great nieces and nephews, Johnny and Ashley Egner; Heather, Reese, Lexi, and Cory WISNOWSKI; Linsy, Bernard, Keara WELCH and Josie EGNER.
