Notes for Samuel WHEATON:

Information from findagrace web site

Samuel married Charity WYCROFF on January 30, 1796. Samuel died in 1798 at age 26 after falling off a horse.

Samuel’s heritage remains a mystery. Most unofficial sources cite Samuel’s father as having been another Samuel Wheaton born about 1747. A few sources cite a Peter S. WHEATON, also born about 1747, as the father of Samuel. Included with this version of his father is that Samuel had two brothers (Peter born 1780 and Robert born 1790).

According to WHEATON family historian Merle WHEATON:

“This writer, (Merle WHEATON) has been unable to obtain information necessary to the ancestry of Samuel wheaton, the husband of Charity WYCKOFF, and make connections between him and the early WHEATONs of New Jersey and Massachusetts. One of the problems is that the name Samuel appears many times in the WHEATON Family. There seems to be a strong probability that Samuel’s fathers name was also Samuel.

According to military archival records at Washington, DC, a Samuel WHEATON of New Jersey served during the Revolutionary War in Captain Isaac MORRISON’s 1st NJ Regiment commanded by Col. Matthias OGDEN. Muster rolls and company payrolls denote rather erratic service, but note that he was present at Valley Forge in May 1778, Mt Holly in May 1778 and “Sick in the Small Pox in Springfield”–June 14, 1778. This Samuel WHEATON may or may not have been in this line of WHEATONs. There is no record of a pension claim. No Revolutionary war pensions were granted until after 1818. This Samuel might have been dead by that time. A pension claim might have listed a wife or widow, which would have been helpful in our search.

Unfortunately, the 1790 Federal Census records for the State of NJ were destroyed by fire, therefore there is no help from that source.

Little is known about Samuel WHEATON (Charity’s husband) except birth and death date, 1772-1798, and a marriage date of 1796 to Charity WYCKOFF. Family tradition tells us that he died as the result of a fall from a horse prior to the birth of his second son also named Samuel. Baptismal records of the Reformed chruch of Readington, Hunterdon County, NJ, indicate that Charity’s husband Samuel was dead when her son Samuel was born November 5, 1798.

This writer and his wife searched the cemetary of the Readington church, but found no graves dated prior to 1800. We were told that there was an earlier cemetary connected with the church, but it was destroyed in a housing development.”

Notes for Charity WYCKOFF:

Information from findagrave website

Charity is sometimes referred to as Geertje/Gertje/Gertie.

To the dismay of many Wyckoff/Wheaton researches, the burial place of Charity (Wyckoff) WHEATON remains unknown.

Charity married Samuel WHEATON at Sussex County New Jersey. Some sources cite the marriage date as 30 Jan 1788.

They had two known sons, Jacob and Samuel. Family tradition has it that Charity was pregnant with her second son, another Samuel, when her husband Samuel WHEATON died after falling from a horse in 1798. Having been widowed, Charity moved from place to place working as a tailor until eventually settling on a farm along Keuka Lake near the town of Pulteney, Steuben, NY.

According to WHEATON historian W. Merle WHEATON:

“Charity WHEATON, together with her two sons, Jacob and Samuel, first appear in a Steuben County census record for the year 1820.

Land records in the Steuben county Clerks office at Bath, NY show that Charity WHEATON made a land purchase in the Town of Pulteney on August 28, 1822. The deed was issued in her name only, very strong evidence that there was no living husband.

Why did Charity and her two sons come to NY State and purchase land on the shores of Crooked (Keuka) Lake?

A reading of Charity’s land deed reveals that bordering her purchase was land owned by John CORYELL. Information gleaned from Clayton’s History of Steuben county tells us that John CORYELL was born in NJ on April 17, 1796, a son of David and Charity CORYELL, who were natives of the same place. The name CORYELL is of French origin and his mother’s ancestors came from Holland.

John CORYELLS father and family moved to Seneca County, NY in 1802, where they resided until 1812 when they settled in the Town of Pulteney, Steuben county. It is possible that Charity WHEATON was acquainted with or perhaps related to the CORYELLS. This might explain why a widow with two children would come to a relatively newly settled area of NY State at that time.

There were WHEATONs living in Yates and surrounding counties at the time, but these WHEATONs have not yet been linked to Charity’s husband Samuel WHEATON of New Jersey. There is no verifiable information that Charity’s husband Samuel ever lived in NY State. There was a Samuel WHEATON who lived in the Town of Seneca, Ontario county in 1790 who is said to have taught the first school in that town in 1792 – according to Brench’s Gazatteer of NY, 1860. However, there is no evidence that this Samuel WHEATON has any connection the family of Charity WHEATON.

* On August 28, 1822, Charity WHEATON received a deed from the Pulteney Estate to land bordering Keuka Lake in the Town of Pulteney, Steuben County, NY.

* On November 1, 1837, she sold the above land (on Keuka Lake) consisting of 90 acres to William C. LAWSHE for the sum of $2,150.

* On December 8, 1837, Charity WHEATON received a deed from the Pulteney Estate. Recorded Liber 32, page 187, Steuben County Clerk’s Office.

“Pulteney Estate (John GORDON, attorney Joseph FELLOS) to Charity WHEATON of Prattsburgh in the county of Steuben, North east 76 acres of Lot No. 63 in the township number 6 in the 4th range of Townships in the County of Steuben bounded as follows: On the E. and N. by the respective N and E lines of said lot, on the west by the part of the said lot heretofore sold to Isaac FENTON, and the middle division line of said lot, heretofore deeded to Robert STANTON containing the said quantity of 76 acres.

Consideration $180.

This appears to be the original Lent Hill, Prattsburgh, NY purchase of this WHEATON family.”

Charity was 70 years old at this time. At her death May 16, 1839, she leaves this land to her son Samuel with the consideration he set aside $500 to “purchase a farm, which shall be for the benefit of the heirs of her son, Jacob WHEATON.” Jacob would have use of this farm in his lifetime but it would belong to his children. On the same date, December 1, 1837, the Pulteney Estate conveyed to Samuel WHEATON some 75 acres of land for the price of $225. This seems to be Samuel W. WHEATON’s original Lent Hill land purchase. This land bordered that of Charity WHEATON. The lands located on Lent Hill, then town of Prattsburgh, now town of Cohocton. This was known as the South 100 acres of Lot No. 76 but calls out “excepting nevertheless and always reserving 25 acres of the southwest part of the above described 100 acres contracted to be sold to Isaac FENTON, leaving 75 acres hereby intended to be conveyed.”

Census records starting in 1820 list the names of Charity and her sons Jacob and Samuel living in New York state and all three of the WHEATONs list New Jersey as the place of their and their father’s birth.”

Samuel WHEATON Family Story 1836;

A Tale by Retta Wheaton CAWARD

Author: Lori ADAMS

Date 25 Jul 1999 12:00 PM GMT

Surnames: WHEATON, STEWART

If you want to know your family tree, this is the tale that was told to me. About this year 1836, Mr and Mrs Samuel WHEATON came to live on Lent Hill and thus the generations of WHEATONs started to take root. Before this time, Samuel WHEATON lived near Branchport where his first wife died leaving him with 3 small children. In looking for a mother for these children he rode horseback to Prattsburg, bringing back with him, his bride, Sarah Ann STEWART on the back of his horse. Then Samuel and Sarah Ann came to what was known to us as the WHEATON homestead. This home was set-back from the road with a row of Maple trees on either side of the drive leading up to the house. Here they spent the next 42 years of their life, dying one month apart in 1878.

There was born to them 11 more children, he named his sons after friends of his like Isaac RAPRALLE, and then added WHEATON. They worked hard growing all their own food, raising flax and weaving it into cloth for bedding, lines and clothes, they carded their own wool and wove it into blankets. Sometimes their suppers were only a kettle of much with milk but they were all fed and clothed.

Nine children grew up and he (Samuel) gave each about 30 acres of land. Six sons settled in the same neighbourhood, which could have been known as the WHEATON District. Now the home and the trees are gone. The church grandfather helped to build and where the WHEATONs have worshipped down through the years, is still being used. Just a few WHEATONs are left on the hill, some are sleeping in the cemetery out by the road, hundreds are scattered here and there, all descendants from these pioneer parents on Lent Hill.

“Now if Samual and Sarah Ann were the trunk of the family tree the limbs are people like you and me”. So if anyone asks about your tree, tell them that was the tale that was told to me.

This was written by Retta Wheaton CAWARD born 1885 and taken from the “WHEATON book” by Merle WHEATON.

Information from findagraveweb site

Family tradition has it that Samuel was born a few months after his father died as a result from falling from a horse in 1798. Now a widow, Samuel’s mother and her two young sons eventually made their way to the town of Pulteney near Keuka Lake at Steuben County, New York. (Read the bio of Samuel’s mother Charity for possible reasons for the move to New York.) At age 7 Samuel was bound out to Andrew (Andrea) O. HIGMAN and he learned both the weaving and carpenter trades. After his apprenticeship was finished, Samuel moved to the west side of Keuka Lake (WHEATON’s Landing) near Hammondsport, New York.

At Keuka Lake he married Amelia FENTON and acquired a large milling property, probably near the town of Branchport. He married Amelia FENTON on 1 June 1824.

Samuel and Amelia were the parents of:

  1. Samuel Wyckoff, b. 1826
  2. Gertrude Jane (JOHNSON), b. 18??
  3. Joseph Fayette, b. 1829
  4. Catherine, b. 1834, d. 1835 #31151188

Amelia (Fenton) WHEATON and daughter Catherine both died in 1835 during a health epidemic. Samuel desired another wife and soon learned of three single women of the STUART/STEWART family at Prattsburgh and went to see them for the first time on a weekend. During the Saturday of that weekend, 11 Jun 1836, he met, married and brought his new wife, the former Sarah Stuart back to his home on Monday.

Sarah was the daughter of Marvin STUART, who lived near the village of Prattsburg and was a direct descendant of the STUART clan of Scotland.

Samuel soon sold his properties and moved to Lent Hill, Prattsburgh, Steuben, NY where he eventually accumulated 250 acres of land. On December 1, 1837, the Pulteney Estate conveyed to Samuel WHEATON some 75 acres of land in the Town of Prattsburgh. This was the first of at least 4 parcels of land acquired by Samuel during his lifetime.

Children of Samuel Wheaton and Sarah Stewart were:

  1. James Riley, b. 1838 #73360076
  2. Alvin Sherman, b. 1839, Civil War veteran
  3. Marvin Samuel, b. 1841 #73359877
  4. Eliza Victoria (WILLIS), b. 1842
  5. Seth, b. 1844, died 1844
  6. Abram Boyd, b. 1846
  7. Isaac Rapalee, b. 1848 #73357639
  8. John Rose, b. 1850
  9. Harvey Roberts, b 1851 #73360348
  10. Henrietta, b. 1852
  11. Laura Ester (PARTRIDGE), b. 1855
  12. Ide May, b. 1859 d. 1862
  13. Mary C., b. 18??

Notes for Samuel J WHEATON:

Information from finda grave

Samuel WHEATON and his wife Fansilla (Fannie) had a few acres of land, a house and a barn at the head of Kirkwood Creek at Prattsburg, Steuben, NY. He made his living by rough carpentry such as building barns. He and his boys hand-shaved shingles during the winter and in autumn they threshed for other farmers with a sweep horse power threshing machine. He and his wife raised the two younger brothers of Fansilla, Daniel and Dick.

The WHEATON’s grew cabbage, cucumbers and peppers which they stored in barrels for winter. Samuel Wheaton owned the first mowing machine on Lent Hill. His wife Fannie had the first sewing machine in the area and nicknamed it the “weed”. They made all of their clothes at home.

Samuel WHEATON was killed by a falling tree while working in the forest on 13 Feb 1899 at Prattsburg, Steuben, New York.
