“However, in the IGI “infant” is written after Richard’s baptism, denoting that they were aware of an infant burial. I scanned through the Great Card Index at the SOG many years ago and notes Richard s of Edward bapt at Otterton 22 June 1625 but…the evidence suggested this was probably a burial not a baptism”

A William WHEATON was baptised on the 25 October 1767 in Sidbury, but there was also a burial on the 14 December 1768. However, the William who married Judith BISHOP fits into this family in respect of time and place. He has therefore been included until further information has been discovered.
Extract from the Times 18th November 1803
A distressing event happened on Monday se’n-night at Henley, near Crewkerne. Mr WHEATON, a gentleman of Devonshire, being on a shooting party with his friends, Mr SALTER of Combe Farme, and Mr PERKINS of Henly, made several uncommonly good shots, and was bantered by one of the party that his good shooting was entirely owing to his gun; upon which he desired to change guns, and soon after firing at another bird, and missing it, he observed that the lock was a bad one, and eager to mark down the bird, he leaped upon a felled tree near him, and whilst standing in that position in the act of charging, the gun (double-barrleed) slipping through his hand towards the ground, went off and lodged the whole contents in his breast. After which he would not suffer himself to be moved, or the surgeons to examine his wounds, till he had made and finished his will, which he did himself with a pencil, whilst reclining on the ground. He was then removed, and after living twenty-five hours in great anguish he expired.
