In February 2012 I was contacted by someone researching the RAYMOND family who sent me a few extra details about the RAYMOND family.

I spent the afternoon looking for additional information……I hate having gaps! And I found William RAYMOND on the 1851 census – the William RAYMOND who was the son of James Wheaton RAYMOND. He was visiting Joseph and Deborah WHEATON.

The line for William RAYMOND, back to James Wheaton RAYMOND and then to Mary WHEATON (who married Richard RAYMOND) goes to her father, James WHEATON who is shown as a possible son of Joseph WHEATON and Elizabeth DAVY.

The family tree looks like this:

Joseph WHEATON and Elizabeth DAVY

Their children include:

Joseph WHEATON (and Elizabeth ASHFORD)       and   James WHEATON (possible son) and Mary ACKLAND

Next generation       Joseph WHEATON (and Deborah WRIGHT)            Mary WHEATON (and Richard RAYMOND)

Next generation                                                                                                James Wheaton RAYMOND (and Mary LOVERING)

Next generation                                                                                                William RAYMOND

I think that makes William RAYMOND about a 1st cousin twice removed of Joseph WHEATON which could go some way to confirming that James (who married Mary ACKLAND) was Joseph’s brother and the actual instead of the possible son of Joseph WHEATON and Elizabeth DAVY. Nowhere near conclusive of course….but useful nevertheless.

A report in The Western Times of 7 June 1872 records the appearance of James (Wheaton ) RAYMOND before the magistrates at Ottery after he was found sleeping in a room adjacent to the local GP’s surgery. It states that he had “run away” from his wife 16 years earlier. After about 9 years absence he had returned to be told he was “not wanted”. He had received the same response when he approached his wife again more recently. With no where to go and very little money he had then wandered the streets until he was arrested. He was ordered to leave the town at once.
