Information from Hazel HOLMES 20/3/2014

The family story is that John William (1901) was working as a Chauffeur in the same household as her (Doris May HOOD’s) mother Margaret HOOD. John Wm said he couldn’t marry Margaret as he was already married.   But I discovered that he didn’t actually marry Hannah until Sep 1934, 3 years after Doris May was born – the cad !! He then had 2 other daughters to his wife they were Celia A Wheaton (b 1935) and Beryl J Wheaton (b 1936).

Anyway Margaret named her daughter Doris May after her best friend Doris May WHEATON, who was the sister of John William. Little Doris May was sent to her maternal grandmother (another Margaret HOOD) who lived in Gateshead, Co. Durham and was brought up by her until her mother still living in London married and her husband offered to adopt Doris May. The young Doris May had to attend court for the hearing and unbeknown to her, her father was there in court, no doubt to give his approval of the adoption by another man. He gave Doris a coin she remembers, but didn’t know who this man was, and didn’t find out until many years later when her mother told her who he was.

Doris May was renamed Barbara as she’d been known as Babs as a child. I would dearly love to find someone with a photo of John William WHEATON as aunt Babs is now 83 and having done a lot of my own family research I offered to research her side of the family, especially for Aunt Babs as she knows nothing about either her HOOD or WHEATON family.
